The darker evenings are here again, personally I love this time of year, the cosy feelings and the guilt free feel of not doing anything productive after work, but I also know this time of year can be a struggle for many, so today, I’m going to share with you some tips on how to remain positive and tackle these darker evenings.
1. Make some time to enjoy the lighter times- It can be a rare occurrence in Winter, but try to embrace as much sunlight as possible when it is here. This can be hard if you’re busy in the week, but take some time out to enjoy Autumnal weekends. Even if it’s slightly drizzly, get the family suited and booted and enjoy some time out- you can always warm up with a hot chocolate after!
2. Use this opportunity to wind down and take some time for yourself- Our bodies naturally want to slow down in the colder, darker months so rather than trying to push through this, make most of the time for winding down. Take some time to do the cosy activities you love like binge watching new series or reading a book. Get children involved by having film nights, baking tasty autumnal treats or by having some family time in the form of board games.
3. Create an atmosphere- I don’t know about you but I just love candles and wax melts, so why not look into getting some of these yourself to create a cosy atmosphere in the home, the lovely scents are sure to brighten your mood. Or you could invest in some fair lights for around the fire place, anything to create cosy vibes and brighten your mood.
4. Maintain Exercise Routines- If you or your family attend any exercise classes, I’d recommend you try keep these up as much as possible. Try to get the balance right between relaxing evenings and keeping active. We know that exercise is good for mental wellbeing, so this will help to keep your mindset positive throughout winter.
5. Plan something to look forward to- I’ve heard many people plan their summer holidays in winter as it gives them something to look forward to. But this doesn’t have to be all about holidays, plan with your family summer activities you may want to try this year, make a summer bucket list that you can all look forward to.
6. Enjoy the comfort food- Now I don’t mean here indulge in all the chocolates, although some days it could be just what you need. But enjoy the comfort food Winter brings such as the soups, stews and Sunday Roasts, things we can’t often face in the warmer months. There’s nothing like homemade, warm comfort food to lift the spirits.
I hope these tips help keep you positive on the days you may be feeling in a slump and just remember, time flies and in a blink of an eye, we’ll soon be back into the lighter months again, so enjoy time for yourself and to simply slow down.
