Christmas Leftovers: What to do with them!

Date: February 20, 2024

We all know Christmas can get rather hectic at times and the house is often full of all things festive. We also know by the end of the Christmas period, our bins are overflowing with Christmas waste! Therefore, I’m sharing with you some tips today on how we can make the most of our left overs, hopefully helping to make more bin space for you and to also help you get the most of your money

Tip number 1: Recycle your Gifts
Received something that’s not quite you? The pressure of having to buy a gift sometimes means you find yourself with something that maybe isn’t your usual go to. Don’t bin them or put them away knowing full well they won’t see the light of day again, instead recycle or re use them! Why not save them for regifting, it may be useful to have a back up incase a certain event slips your mind. Another option is to trade them, someone else in your family may welcome the gift with open arms and be willing to swap it for a gift that they wouldn’t necessarily use. There is also the option of donating them to charity shops, shelters, foodbanks or baby banks or refuges. Why throw something away when it could bring happiness to someone else.

Tip Number 2: Recycle your Christmas Cards

Firstly, Christmas cards are made out of paper so they can widely be recycled, you may need to take off any fancy, glitzy bits. Or you may want to get creative with your old cards by making bookmarks, gift tags for next year, or simply cut them into strips and use them for scrap paper. I remember often sat at the table when I was younger with my scissors getting crafty with Christmas cards!

Tip Number 3: Recycle your Christmas Tree

Now if you have a fake Christmas tree, you may want to skip this tip. However, for those who have a real tree at Christmas time, there is plenty you can do to recycle it. Firstly, ask around, in my area you ,can pay a charity to come and take it away for recycling for a small fee, it’s a win win-win you really, you’re getting rid of the tree hassle free but also doing some good too! You can also use your old Christmas tree in your garden, so why not replant it? Now you may be thinking but the roots have gone! However, Christmas trees are pretty badass and if left in pot of soil to establish, they can grow! You can also use your tree to help wildlife have a place to shelter, pop it in a corner where it is not too exposed and animals struggling in the winter will have a place to hide.

Tip Number 4: Make the most of your Christmas Dinner Left Overs

The cost of living crisis is taking it’s toll on us all, therefore it is important we get the most out of what we have, so instead of throwing your Christmas left overs, why not try use them to make some festive food. You can’t beat a nice festive sandwich and there’s plenty of recipes online for a delicious turkey curry! Here are some links below which may give you some left over inspiration:
