You’ve heard of bathing in water, you’ve heard about sunbathing, but have you heard about Forest bathing? This is an activity that has the ability to give your levels of well-being a huge boost AND the best thing is…. No equipment is needed! Also, if you don’t have a forest or wood nearby, then fear not! You can still partake in this activity, using a park, natural area or any other Greenland will still leave you feeling at peace with yourself.
So, what is Forest Bathing?
To put it simply, Forest Bathing is using your senses to really allow you to be in tune with the nature around you. It is being calm and quiet amongst the trees, breathing deeply, and observing everything around you. All that matters is the here and now as you immerse yourself with the wonders around you.
How Do You Forest Bathe?
First of all, plan to leave your devices behind and any other distractions at home. If you are one of those persons who struggle with the ideology of this, then at least turn off your device whilst you prepare to live in the moment for a little while.
Secondly, as you enter the place you will be bathing, start by wandering aimlessly, breathe in the scents and listen to the sounds around you, encouraging children to do the same if this is a group activity. You should be free to go wherever you want to go!
Slow down as you make your way through, there is no rush, you could even pause to really look at the things around you.
You may then want to find somewhere to sit, the more you take in what is around you, the more you will notice, and you might be surprised at what you see!
There is no time limit to the time you spend Forest Bathing, but if you allow yourself at least an hour it gives you the opportunity to really tune into what’s around you and to tune into how this experience is making you feel.
What are the benefits?
It is surprising just how much Forest Bathing can benefit you:
- It reduces levels of stress
- It can improve your mood
- It allows your creative juices to begin flowing
- It can boost your immune system
- It can reduce high blood pressure
- It can even speed up recovery from illnesses
- Increases concentration levels
There are no set times to Forest Bathe, it can be done all year round and all you need is yourself to be able to do this. This is something I’ve been slacking, but sharing this post with you has given me the kick up the bum I need and I hope as a result of this post you experience some special mindful moments!
