Baked Apples: Comforting Campfire Cooking!

Date: February 20, 2024

Late summer into Autumn is the perfect time for picking apples, it is such a lovely activity for all to enjoy. But why not take this further and cook the apples that are picked! A fantastic way to make use of the apples collected but the end result will also leave you with a lovely comforting campfire snack. So today, I’m going to tell you exactly how you can make your own baked apples.

The items you will need:

A campfire- you will use the embers to bake your apple.
Campfire Equipment- fire safety gloves
Tinfoil
Tongs
Apple Corer
Bowl
Apples (shop bought or picked)
Brown Sugar
Cinnamon
Raisins
Squirty Cream (optional)
Spoon

The Process:

First of prepare and light out campfire, allowing it to burn down to embers.

Then begin to prepare your apples. Firstly, make sure your apples are washed. Using the apple corer, remove the apple core but try not to make the hole go through all the apple. I feel the apples work better when their bottom is still intact so the filling stays in place and doesn’t ooze out.

After that, mix together some brown sugar, cinnamon and raisins then use this to fill the centre of your apple. You can actually play around with these ingredients as nuts and oats can also be used.

Wrap your apple in tin foil and place your apple on the hot embers to bake for around 5-10 minutes. Use fire gloves and tongs to test if the apple is ready, the apple will feel soft if they are ready. Remove the apples using tongs and allow to cool in your bowl.

Once the apple is cool, remove the foil but please be wary of steam as some may still escape the apple. For an extra tasty treat, add squirty cream to your apple, then eat with your spoon and most of all enjoy!
