Let’s discuss the wonder of the S’more, a treat that is probably well known to many and a real pleaser around the campfire. However, there may be others still out there who are yet to experience the gooey, chocolatey magic of the S’more! I hold my hands up and say it has only been recently I tried my first and once I did, I instantly understood how it got its name.
So, what is a S’more you may find yourself asking? This campfire treat consists of a toasted marshmallow, sandwiched between two chocolate digestive biscuits and when that goo makes the chocolate melt- magic happens.
There are many variations of the S’more, some may choose to use crackers or cookies to sandwich their marshmallows and adding extra chocolate pieces for those chocoholics out there is also another variation. Whichever method you decide, it is a guarantee that the end product will leave you wanting S’more!
These joyful little treats are also very versatile, they are perfect to use for those who are new to Forest School as they are a wonderful introduction to the wonders of campfire cooking. They are also fantastic for those who may be more advanced with their skills as they are rather simple to make which means they can be made completely independently too- just watch out for those biscuit thieves who squirrel away those digestives when your back is turned!
Here is a step-by-step guide to help you begin your own S’more journey:
1. Use a toasting fork, skewer or stick to toast your marshmallow by holding it above the fire. If you are worried about the stick or skewer catching fire, you can always dampen these off in water beforehand.
2. Rotate the marshmallow gently and look out for it becoming golden all the way round. Warning, the marshmallow may catch fire, so get ready to blow!
3. Once the marshmallow is a lovely golden colour, use two digestive biscuits to gently slide the marshmallow off the stick/skewer/fork, sandwiching the marshmallow. You will see the chocolate begin to melt.
4. Give the S’more a quick blow, burning your tongue could ruin the whole experience for you so don’t rush in with the last part!
5. Devour and enjoy… oh and make sure you check your lip once finished, as I find it is extremely hard to devour a S’more without getting goo somewhere on your face!
I hope this little blog post and introduction leaves you wanting S’more.
(Disclaimer: I am aware this joke has been used more than once, but resisting was proving difficult)
