Now if I didn’t do a Christmas Blog Post in December, I’d be very disappointed in myself! So, for my first Christmas Grass Roots Muddy Boots blog I will be sharing a Christmas craft with you that is simple, effective and fun… Santa Gnomes!
Some of you may be a dab hand at this crafting malarkey, but for those starting out in particular and aren’t overly craft minded (trust me I can relate) these gnomes are a good place to start.
So let me talk you through how to make your very own!
What you will need:
Firstly, you’re going to need some wood and a sheath knife for your whittling. Longer pieces of wood are easier for grip and you can always saw them down to size later.
Then you whittle the end of the wood to a point like below. I tend to visualise making a pencil by twisting the wood round as I whittle. It is totally up to you how far you go, depending on how large you want gnome Santa’s hat. Be patient at this part and yes, your hand may begin to hurt, but no pain no gain!

Once you are happy with your point, we need to make a space for Santa’s face. To do this, slide the blade gently and slowly, a bit at time to make an oval shape on once side of the wood.
Finally, the best bit, fun part begins! It is time to paint your Santa gnome. Paint his hat red and dab the white paint around his oval face to make a beard effect. Add on his facial features and leave to dry, then tada! You have a Santa Gnome. You may also decide to varnish them so you can leave them outside to welcome Santa and his Reindeers on Christmas Eve.
I hope you enjoy this festive activity!
