“I’m Just Playing”
Dear Forest School Leader,
I know you have lots planned for me,
I know you’ve put thought into it, I can see
But for now, I’m just playing…
One day I’d love to craft and use your tools,
I make sure I listen to all the rules,
But not now, I’m just playing…
Toasting Marshmallows, that does sound yum.
I would safe sit, until my legs go numb,
But not now, I’m just playing…
Yes, I could build a den so I could hide,
I’m just really enjoying being outside,
So, for now, I’m just playing…
Using knots and crafting all sounds good,
But I’m really enjoying all this mud,
So, for now, I’m just playing…
I know you’ve brought lots for me to explore,
I’m really not trying to be a bore,
I just like playing…
You see I’m still learning lots of new skills.
As I run up and down these hills,
I just like playing…
I’m learning more and more each day.
I’m just learning it my own way,
Because, I like playing…
Social skills, independence and creativity,
Are all developing through my chosen activity,
Because, I like playing!
So, thank you leader, for thinking of me,
When I’m with you, I feel free,
Because I am playing.
Those who are familiar with the Forest School ethos, knows that play is essential for children. However, I’m sure there’s a few of us out there who have felt slightly disheartened when a child does not choose any other activity you have provided and spends all their time playing. So, the aim of this poem was to remind you, that it is okay for a child to want to spend their sessions playing, they are still developing and learning many valuable skills through their play, don’t put too much pressure on yourself to ensure all the children have had a go at the activities you provide and continue to remind yourself how amazing play actually is, learning to play means you can play to learn and maybe we should all learn a lesson from those children who are “just” playing.
