The frosty and chilly mornings are here! We’re having to get up that extra bit earlier to defrost the car and the time has come to dig out the woollies. Which means, it’s time to change the kit your child will need for Forest School. Here are the items that I’d recommend to ensure your child is comfortable for outdoor winter play.
Base Layers- The key to keeping warm in Forest School is using layers, so thermal vests, thermal long-sleeve tops & thermal leggings are highly recommended. At a push, you can also get fleece lined tights.
Warm Trousers- If you can get hold of fleecy jogging bottoms, these would be ideal.
A long Sleeved Top- This doesn’t have to be too thick as extra layers will be needed, but making sure arms are covered will ensure your child is able to keep warm.
A warm jumper- Fleecy or woolly would be ideal.
A warm Coat and Jacket, ideally Waterproof- The final layer for children which they can put on or take off depending on how cold it is.
Hat, Scarf and Gloves- You may want to pack a few spares of these, you know what children can be like! Waterproof mittens can go over children’s gloves. Snoods are a good alternative to scarves, and if possible try get a hat that will go over your child’s ears.
Socks- You will need a couple pairs of these, a pair of cotton socks on the bottom and thick thermal/woolly socks to wear over the top. I’d highly recommend packing a couple of spares too!
Wellies or Boots- Warm snow boots will probably be better than wellies, but if not aim to try get fleeced lined wellies. You can always layer up on the socks if you only can access normal wellies, but just be prepared you may need to go up a size as they’re not the roomiest for this!
Waterproofs- These give that extra protection, keep an eye out for fleeced lined ones.
Spares- As always try have a spare of each item, you never know what the day will bring in Forest School and what your little ones may get up to! Plus, you’re covered for any potential toileting accidents if they’ve left it too late and they have to try de-layer!
